Project NENA will be utilzing 2 parcels in the heart of Katie Hill to create a community garden for its residents. The garden will be in honor of Keith Vaughn, a child who was killed tragically while celebrating his 5th birthday last year on Katie Hill.
Moving to Katie Hill (Fern Avenue) just 3 years ago, I recognized a community with limited resources and minimal access to basic necessities. This past fall, I created Project NENA ( Northeast Nashville Alliance) to address many of the challenges and issues facing our small Northeast Nashville community. Our main focus is to partner with our residents to provide a more holistic and innovative approach to foster a community that is inclusive, restorative, and sustainable by re-neighboring and “doing with”, not “doing for”.
One of Katie Hill’s biggest challenges has been a lack of community involvement and inclusivity. When a neighborhood has no central gathering area or activities for children and families, crime tends to linger and residents have minimal pride and ownership in their own community. Keith’s garden will create an opportunity to empower our community by sharing responsibility, mutual support, and accountability for the garden. This will also create opportunities for our residents and children to learn about growing their own food, eating healthy, and entrepreneurship.
We appreciate all donations and assistance in making this happen for our community. Local Businesses please contact Lindsey Langley for sponsorship opportunities or fill out the form below.
